How to Change the Electricity Account Holder Name

A Step-by-Step Guide for Home and Condominium Owners

When purchasing a house or condominium or receiving a lawful transfer of property ownership, one important task that should not be overlooked is changing the electricity account holder name so that it accurately reflects the new owner. This ensures that all rights, obligations, and electricity bills are correctly assigned to you.

Currently, the electricity authorities in Thailand offer two convenient channels for submitting a request: in person at the service office and via the online system. This article summarizes the procedures and required documents in a clear and practical manner.

Option 1: Applying in Person at the Electricity Authority Office

Applicants may submit their request at the electricity authority office responsible for the area where the property is located:

  • Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) for Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan

  • Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) for all other provinces

Required Documents

  • Copy of the house registration where the electricity meter is installed

  • Copy of the sale and purchase agreement or ownership document (e.g. Tor.Dor. 23 from the Land Office)

  • Copy of the applicant’s national ID card and house registration

  • Copy of name–surname change certificate (if applicable)

  • Power of attorney with THB 10 stamp duty (if authorizing a representative)

  • Copy of the representative’s ID card and house registration (if applicable)

  • Any electricity bill receipt (latest or previous month)

Once all documents are submitted, the officer will update the account information and issue a new electricity service contract. The process generally takes no longer than 30 minutes.

Option 2: Applying via the Online System

Applicants who prefer not to visit the office in person may submit their request online by following these steps:

Online Application Steps

  1. Access the official electricity authority online service website

  2. Select the menu “Other Services”

  3. Choose “Change Electricity Account Holder Name”

  4. Select Individual as the applicant type

  5. Complete the personal information and electricity meter number (8 digits)

  6. Upload the required supporting documents

  7. Verify your identity using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number

Documents to Upload (Certified True Copies)

  • National ID card or passport

  • House registration

  • Proof of ownership or legal rights to the property

    • such as a sale and purchase agreement, lease agreement, or court appointment as estate administrator

    • required only if the applicant’s name does not appear in the house registration

After OTP verification, the online application process is considered complete.

Do You Need to Change the Electricity Account Name When Buying a Condominium?

New condominium units (first-hand purchase)
No action is required from the buyer. The project developer will arrange the installation of utilities and register the electricity account after the transfer of ownership is completed.

Second-hand condominium units
The buyer must personally apply to change the electricity account holder name by following one of the procedures described above.

Summary

  • Changing the electricity account holder confirms the rights and responsibilities of the new owner

  • Applications can be submitted in person or online

  • The process is straightforward and time-efficient

  • For second-hand condominiums, the change should be completed promptly after ownership transfer
